GUEST REVIEW: ALDI Festive Cheese and Wine Pairings

Guest Reviewer, Mellow Mummy has been trying out some of the delicious cheese and wine pairings by ALDI which make a festive feast this Christmas.

I love Christmas food and drink - a perfect excuse to try something just a little bit special. Master of Wine Sarah Jane Evans has helped ALDI come up with some balanced combinations of cheese and wine to enjoy over the Christmas period and we had a chance to try one of them out.

We tried The Exquisite Collection Limestone Coast Chardonnay (2012) which costs just £5.99 for a bottle at ALDI.  This unoaked Australian Chardonnay was a refreshing change for me - it is fruity and crystal clear, unlike some Australian Chardonnay's, this Limestone Coast white wine it has a clean, smooth and refreshing flavour that isn't too heavy.  I really enjoyed it but do you know what?  This wine really did come into its element when consumed at the same time as the recommended cheese pairing!

ALDI recommended pairing the Limestone Coast Chardonnay with their Extra Mature Cheddar which was temptingly wrapped in black wax to make it look like a little Christmas gift!  The cheddar was smooth, almost buttery, but with a gorgeous salty crumbliness that I found irresitible.  Between me, my husband and my two girls we very nearly devoured the entire 250g cheese in one sitting!

I thought the combination of cheese and wine was perfect - the cheese worked so well with a sweet digestive and the tang of the Chardonnay and the wine itself really released its flavours when drunk with the cheese.  I think the wine would work very well with a white meat such as Turkey so it could be a perfect tipple for Christmas Day!

Other cheese and wine recommendations at ALDI include Fletcher’s Fine Ruby Port NV and Wensleydale with Cranberries Truckle; just my kind of thing!
